About Us

darkaudio (also know as DA) is part of the brand group ‘dark’ the parent of www.darkaudio.co.uk and www.designisdark.com. Our use of the word ‘dark’ came about as a positive descriptive word, i.e. ‘that’s dark’ (meaning that’s good), ‘this music is dark’, ‘design is dark’ etc.

What is darkaudio?

darkaudio is both a free audio hosting site for DJ’s and a growing database of dance music. We created the site in 2006 as a portal to store and share our own DJ mixes, but then made it freely available to everyone. It’s kind of like a YouTube for DJ’s.

Who’s behind darkaudio?

darkaudio is owned by Matt Osborne, Will Usher, Luther Davies and Ania Skowron. We are all designers, based in London.

Our Policy

darkaudio is not just another hosting site for DJ’s. We personally listen to every mix that is uploaded and monitor all of the content. We use the site to promote quality dance music, mixes and talented DJ’s through exposure on the main audio page, LiveFeed, the podcast and the events. The site has been developed to promote music, hence the simple monotone design. There are no gimmicks and our philosophy is to keep things simple.

The Podcast

The podcast is building in popularity, now with over 2000 subscribers each week. Every Wednesday we add our pick of the week from the site. The music policy is usually of a deep or tech style.

Events

We also host events. If you upload to darkaudio and we like your mixes, then we'll definitely ask you to DJ. The first two were held in Shoreditch, London. For updates on future events please keep watch on the LiveFeed part of the site.

The future of DA

Currently we are recoding darkaudio to include new features for v3.0. We intend to improve functionality and develop the site from more of a user perspective. We'd like darkaudio to be used by anyone that has an interest in dance music and finding new music, rather than specifically DJ’s. We’re also working on other offshoot projects such as a portable mp3 player that receives audio directly and wirelessly from the site; the DA Player.

Stats

darkaudio now has over 1,500 main page views and 20,000 direct audio file requests per day (15th August 2009).
